Writing the book is the hard part.
Let me make the rest of the process easy.

EDITORIAL ASSESSMENT
What Is Editorial Assessment?
A big-picture look at your manuscript’s content and structure. Ideal for kicking off the editing process or for checking in to make sure that content revisions have been working the way you hoped and planned!
Who is this perfect for?
Authors with finished manuscripts, whether you’re on your first draft or almost done with content revisions and trying to decide if you’re ready to start copyediting. I prefer to review manuscripts as a cohesive whole, so I strongly recommend finishing a full draft before submitting your manuscript for editorial revisions!
Ideal genres: transformational nonfiction (personal growth/self-help, business, leadership, coaching, spirituality), memoir, fiction (literary fiction, dystopia, science fiction, fantasy, romance, erotica)
This isn’t a fit for…
Unfinished/early draft manuscripts. Finish it up and then send it my way! ?
Genres I do not serve at this stage: health titles, history and historical fiction, network marketing-related titles
What you get (deliverables):
A letter overviewing what works, what doesn’t, and what needs tweaking in your manuscript, highlighting the 3–5 most important areas you should focus on when content editing.
In-text comments calling out really great writing and ideas, as well as areas you might want to come back to or build on a bit more.
(Optional) 1 forty-five-minute Zoom call to review my suggestions and design a revision plan that works for you. Feeling introverted? No worries, I feel ya. My revisions should be plenty to work off of even without a call!
Line Editing (Memoir or fiction)

LINE EDITING
What Is A Line Edit?
As the name suggests, line editing (a.k.a. stylistic editing) is a line-by-line review of your manuscript to check how your writing works on a sentence level. Line editing is super duper helpful for fiction authors, since it’s a great chance to make sure that your writing accomplishes what you meant it to, as clearly and effectively as possible!
Who is this perfect for?
Like with editorial assessment, this is a service best performed on a whole, finished manuscript. Context is king here! Thus, I strongly recommend finishing a full draft and conducting any major rewrites/ substantive edits you have planned before submitting your manuscript for line editing.
Ideal genres: fiction and memoir
This isn’t a fit for…
Unfinished/early draft manuscripts. Finish it up and then send it my way! ?
Authors looking for a “one and done” editing service. While line editing may address small mechanical issues, those aren’t the focus here. Line editing should never be seen as a substitute for copyediting!
While nonfiction authors can always benefit from a good line edit, it’s not always imperative for you guys. If you’re a nonfiction editor considering a line edit, shoot me a quick email or call first and we’ll chat about your needs!
What you get (deliverables):
A marked-up copy of your manuscript with “hell yes” changes made using Track Changes and on-the-fence issues or areas you might want to come back to queried using in-text comments.
A clean copy of your manuscript with all Track Changes changes accepted. Queries remain in the margins of this one, so that you can easily find and adjust them!
A line editing style guide for your manuscript, detailing the stylistic choices I made during my line edit for your future reference.

COPYEDITING
What Is A CopyEdit?
This is what 99% of people think of when we start talkin’ editing. THE TYPO CHECK. A copyedit is a thorough review for mechanical errors in your manuscript: spelling errors, grammar issues, clarity tweaks, all that fun stuff.
Who is this perfect for?
Authors whose manuscripts are getting close to the finish line: you’re loving your content, and you’re ready to make sure it looks good. Nobody wants that ever-dreaded “was this even edited?” review!
Ideal genres: any!
This isn’t a fit for…
Authors looking for someone to rewrite their books for them. One of my biggest editorial values is preserving my authors’ voices, so if it ain’t broke, I’m not gonna fix it!
Anyone seeking absolute perfection. I hear you all, I’m a perfectionist too! But looking for a 100% error-free manuscript is looking for a unicorn. Maybe you think you’ve seen one, but I certainly haven’t! I’ll level your manuscript up like WHOA, but if you’re looking for someone to put a horn on it and call it Sparkles, well, you need a witch, not a copyeditor!
What you get (deliverables):
A marked-up copy of your manuscript with outright errors corrected using Track Changes and on-the-fence issues or areas you might want to come back to queried using in-text comments.
A clean copy of your manuscript with all Track Changes changes accepted. Queries remain in the margins of this one, so that you can easily find and adjust them!
A style guide for your manuscript, detailing the stylistic choices I made during my copyedit for your future reference. (If you already had a style guide from previous edits, during this stage I’ll update it for ya!)
Light Copyediting

LIGHT COPYEDITING
What Is A Light Copyedit (and why does it have its own section)?
So, your manuscript has already been copyedited, but you want to make sure it’s really shining. That’s where a light copyedit comes in! It’s what many people might call a proofread—an extra check over an already edited manuscript to make sure that it’s the best it can be, mechanics-wise. Again, this is all about spelling, grammar, and clarity!
Nerdy publishing tip: many experts recommend that authors hire different editors for copyediting vs. light copyediting, since having a new set of eyes on the manuscript at this stage can be invaluable!
Who is this perfect for?
Authors who have already been through a copyedit (or two!) and want fresh eyes on their manuscript to check for any stubborn errors.
Ideal genres: any!
This isn’t a fit for…
Authors who have not already gone through at least one round of copyediting!
Again, anyone seeking absolute perfection. I’m thorough and you’ll love the uplevel you get from this edit, but no editor, no matter how talented, is infallible.
A style guide for your manuscript, detailing the stylistic choices I made during my light copyedit for your future reference. (If you already had a style guide from previous edits, during this stage I’ll update it for ya!)
Proofreading

PROOFREADING
What Is a Proofread (And How Is It Different from a Light Copyedit)?
Gonna be a total stickler here (it’s okay, you love me for it ?) and tell you that “proofreading” is basically the most misused term in editing. While often we think it means a light copyedit (see above), a proofread is actually a review of a manuscript after it’s been formatted for publication. So that’s what this service entails!
Who is this perfect for?
Authors who have had their already-copyedited manuscripts formatted and need someone to check for errors introduced during the formatting stage (or missed up ’til this point).
Ideal genres: any!
This isn’t a fit for…
Manuscripts that were not copyedited prior to formatting.
Manuscripts that have not yet been formatted! (P.S. Please check with your formatter before hiring a proofreader, to make sure that you will be able to apply any changes suggested during the proofreading process. Some formatters do not offer revisions once a manuscript has been formatted!)
What you get (deliverables):
A marked-up copy of your manuscript. For PDF manuscripts, errors will be flagged using comments in the margins. For Word manuscripts, errors will be corrected in Track Changes and/or queried using Word’s comments feature.
You’ve got questions? I’ve got answers!
I have no idea what I need! Can you help?
Do you offer sample edits?
Yessiree! I provide sample edits upon request for line editing, copyediting, and proofreading services.
I have two sample edit options:
1. FREE sample edit: send me your whole manuscript and I’ll randomly choose 1,000 words to edit and send back to you. This gives me the best sense of your manuscript, so it’s always what I recommend!
2. PAID sample edit: looking for an edit of a specific section? I’ll edit up to 3,000 words at my quoted rate for your project. If you decide to work with me further, that fee will be subtracted from your total owed!
I always recommend the first option, since it tends to be more representative of how we’ll work together and, well, it’s free!
I plan on a seven-day turnaround time for sample edits, but if you’re working on a crunch and are looking for something more quickly, just let me know! ?
How long does editing take?
Depends on my availability! This is why I ask for your desired publication date when you request a quote. I always endeavor to turn around an edit within 2–4 weeks (depending how hefty it is!) but my schedule does book up in advance.
If you have time constraints but really want to work together, just say something! Often we can make something work. ?
Why do you list ranges instead of a standard price for each service?
Different types of manuscripts vary in how much time they take to edit. Word count, subject matter, writing style, and work already performed to clean up a manuscript can all make a difference! I try to keep a consistent hourly rate, so for each project I quote based on how long your specific manuscript will take me. I base my rates on the EFA recommendations here!
Want a lower rate for your project? It always helps to self-edit as much as you can before submitting your manuscript for professional editing. Even a single reread on your own to check for typos can make a huge difference, and let me focus on the more nitpicky stuff!
Why do you charge different rates for different types of books?
See the previous question! Many services have different rates for fiction vs. nonfiction because they have different editing needs.
Do you work on partial manuscripts?
No! Please finish a full draft before sending it my way.
This is to benefit YOU. Manuscripts almost always grow and change during the writing process, so mid-draft is almost always too early for an editing investment to really be a worthwhile one. Once you have the whole project on the page (yes, even a sh*tty first draft!), you’re in a way better place to benefit from my services.
Feel free to book a call with me if you think your project is an exception. I’m glad to check in about whether you’re ready to invest in editing!
Are any calls included with these services?
Editorial assessment services come with an optional 45-minute Zoom call to discuss my notes. Totally no pressure, but this can be a great way to touch base and make sure that we’re on the same page! All other services rely on text-based communication only. Calls aren’t generally necessary for more mechanical edits!
Can I sign up for more than one service?
Sure thing! But if you’re looking at more than 2 services, consider investing in an editing package. In most cases that will actually save you money!
If you send me a quote request and I think an editing package will be the best fit for your needs, I’ll let you know when I send over your quote!
I have a super short/super long manuscript. Is that okay?
Sure thing! Provided that we’re a fit to work together, I’m open to all manuscript lengths. That said, I do have a $100 minimum for services, so manuscripts under 10,000 words will be quoted my rate for a comparable 10,000-word project.
As a reminder, I do not offer editing services for low-content books or children’s books! Those are such specialized projects that I highly recommend you find a professional who specializes in those areas.
Do you have a refund policy?
Nope! I work with authors who are 100% committed to editing and launching their books, and to make that happen you need skin in the game. Once a manuscript has been submitted, I do not offer refunds – but don’t worry, you have twelve months from your date of purchase to make use of your services.
What if I XXX? Can we still work together?
Just ask! My free discovery calls are a great time to figure out which of my programs or packages is right for you. I’d always love to chat! ?
